The Future of the Saguaro National Park Desert
The future of the Saguaro National Park desert is always in contestation. The city of Tucson, which bifurcates this national park, is not the first time that people have lived in this region of the Sonoran Desert. The Hohokam people first arrived here two thousand years ago. Following their civilization flourishing, an extended drought forced the Hohokam to abandon the desert. Leaving behind complex irrigation systems, farmlands and villages. It’s remarkable to stand in these canyons, surrounded by the mountains and imagine what it might have been like to in two thousand years ago.
