Proust and the Lake

Proust and the Lake

Thinking about the relationships between Proust and the Lake Series and the experience of seeing this world through another’s eyes. What happens when we return to the same place again and again? Over the last few months I have been thinking about the ways the lake reveals more of itself to me with each passing year. And how each of us has our own relationship to the lake here in Chicago. How our own stories and histories of this landscape and place come together to form our understanding of this remarkable landscape.

Clouds fill the sky over an almost placid Lake Michigan as I contemplate the relationship between Proust and the Lake.

“The only true voyage of discovery, the only fountain of Eternal Youth, would be not to visit strange lands but to possess other eyes, to behold the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others, to behold the hundred universes that each of them beholds, that each of them is…”

Marcel Proust, La Prisonnière
