Landscapes

Landscapes

This new book, Landscapes, gathers work shaped by long-term engagement with the natural world and its transformations. The Lake Series steps beyond the walls of the studio, it is an edition that showcases expansive and open-ended landscapes. It is in contrast to the compression felt in the city of Chicago that sits along the shore. I see the sky and water change before my eyes each day, the rhythms and character of the lake evidencing themselves over time. In the Lake Series and in the other landscape editions found in this book, time is an essential component to the work. These extended relationships to place, as an artist, allow for a deeper understanding of the natural world in all of its rich and remarkable diversity.

Each of the editions found in this book engage with landscape as culture. Our understanding of the natural world is often defined first by the historical and cultural narratives that we learn as a children and that in turn shape how we relate to a given landscape upon first encounter.
