Heat of Its Being and Its Will to Be

The form of the tree, a complex and interconnecting network of roots, trunks, limbs, branches and leaves take center stage in Heat of Its Being and Its Will to Be. Looking skyward these impossible views of trees are created painstakingly by hand in the studio. Working from a myriad of source photographs to form a singular artwork. Heat of Its Being and Its Will to Be is a collection of limited edition prints available for purchase.

Very slowly burning, the big forest tree
stands in the slight hollow of the snow
melted around it by the mild, long
heat of its being and its will to be
root, trunk, branch, leaf, and know
earth dark, sun light, wind touch, bird song.
– Ursula Le Guin, excerpt from Kinship

I find myself coming back to trees again and again with new ideas that extend and connect, like branches, to prior editions. They occupy many realms in my mind. From the physical to the metaphorical. From the scientific to the mystical.
Each tree is an individual expression of yearning, survival and mortality. I am taken by how they reflect, in their physical form, the environment they have grown in. Standing in testimony to the history of a specific place and time.

With Heat of Its Being and Its Will to Be comes new ways of thinking about the forms a tree can take. What happens if we imagine a tree in reverse? What if we extend the structure of a tree?

I began this series by thinking about how to create trees using extended photographic techniques. Exploring ways I can employ the digital dark room to actively construct new possibilities for how we can conceive of the tree.
