Everglades, Florida
Everglades, Florida is a photographic edition of a landscape shaped by the presence of Indigenous peoples and extraordinary biodiversity over thousands of years. In the 1940s, Florida lawmakers dismissed it as a valueless swamp — a label that justified draining, filtering, dissecting, and selling this wetland until it stood at half its original size. Decades later, severe flooding and ecological collapse forced a reversal. Canals were backfilled; the Kissimmee River’s curves were restored. Today and in centuries to come, this ecosystem and human life remain inseparably linked.
These photographs treat the Everglades as an interdependent system rather than a vista — a mesh of water, grass, and root in slow yet constant motion. This landscape requests sustained, patient attention rather than a single defining view. Looking this closely makes its own quiet argument: that land earns its value by being understood, not by being cleared.
