America: Tie Siding, Wyoming

America: Tie Siding, Wyoming

If you were driving on the highway and blinked you might miss Tie Siding, Wyoming. A small unincorporated town, struggling to survive. Post office and a general store are about all that remain open. However, it wasn’t the single intersection that makes up the town square that drew Schatz to this region. Rather, it is the incredible landscape that surrounds it.

The plains that stretch away from these buildings have an openness and generosity that is both striking and profound. The grasslands that make up the landscape here, are studded with quartz outcrops and the occasional clump of lonesome trees. Bent and twisted by strong winds and cold winters, the shape of these trees are a record of time.

The land is primarily used for ranching. The soil is too thin to grow crops. So that even after all this time, the human incursions are limited. However, like everywhere it seems, power lines and the occasional fence cut through the landscape. The clumsiness of the transmission towers is at odds with the incredible beauty of nature.
