The landscapes of Nebraska are open and expansive in America: Fields and Forests. The sky stretches up and away. The land extends out to the distant horizon. In many of these rural spaces, you witness monoculture farming on a massive scale today. Field after field of corn or soybeans deplete the land and soil with each passing harvest. Trees remain only in places where a tractor or livestock can’t reach on the steep sides of gullies and ravines. These narrow passages are in turn, full of wildlife that rely on it for shelter, food and raising their young.

As you move east from the farmlands of Nebraska, humans and nature come up against each other with greater frequency and abruptness. A wilderness area sits alongside an industrial park. Forests quickly let onto a subdivision. The trails walked here are not solitary paths. They see many visitors over the course of a year. But there is still something sublime about these places and the hold they have over us.
