A thin layer of ice on the lake had managed to form in the night. On the 29th of January, as the sun began to climb into the sky and the colors shifted from warm oranges to deep blues, the lake, in contrast, sat perfectly still. The winds had eased and the surface of the water, at least near shore, had time to become coated in this veneer by morning. But already, further out from shore, you can see the lake is already picking up waves and breaking apart the edges of the ice.
